Summer Songs and Social Consciousness in Children’s Music
As summer gets into full swing, a few good things are making us smile:
The California sound in children’s music: Have you heard Best Coast’s new album, Best Kids? It is certainly making waves. Mamatomo Mama offers some crafty ideas for playing along to “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” Best Coast’s arrangement has “a nice, strong beat which gives kids a good chance to keep in time while they shake shakers or bang drums.”
“Shine Your Light,” another sunny So Cal single, is the result of a new collaboration among LA based kindie artists Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band, Andrew and Polly, and Mista Cookie Jar (aka the Hold Tight, Shine Bright Collective). The tune, which just started spinning on SiriusXM Kids Place Live, is the first from an upcoming compilation of songs from various artists. Proceeds will benefit RAICES, The Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services. The 501(c)3 nonprofit organization provides legal aid to displaced refugee and immigrant families.
|Puppeteer and actor John Tartaglia, who created the hit animated Jim Henson Company / PBS Kids TV show “Splash and Bubbles,” is making appearances this summer to celebrate the release of the new album Splash and Bubbles: Rhythm of the Reef. These happy-snappy songs inspire kids to love the ocean and its creatures. Kidskintha and the Muppets fan site ToughPigs recently published interviews with John .
Summer playlists: Parents magazine and SiriusXM Kids Place Live suggest a list of great seasonal tunes, including classic songs by Lucky Diaz and Justin Roberts. Next week, our friends at Bump Club and Beyond will publish our annual summer road trip free streaming playlist.
Dads Who Rock. Father’s Day may be over, but we work with some of the top daddies in family music. The “epic sounds” featured by GeekDad and Love Mrs. Mommy showcase what’s new Ants Ants Ants, Red Yarn, Hot Peas ‘n Butter and more.
Back to the Land by Hot Peas ‘N Butter ~ A new album from the touring multi-lingual NYC based band celebrates roots music and our fragile planet (July 6). Guests include Laurie Berkner, Dan Zanes and Peter Yarrow. Hot Peas ‘n Butter invites young music-lovers and Earth-savers to contribute short videos about what “back to the land” means to them. These fan videos will be included in a music video later this summer. Get the submission details at this link.
|Family Music Artists Speak Out
Children’s music is not immune to these turbulent times. Several new songs and albums this year reflect the swirls of controversy in the society at large. Sugar Mountain PR and our clients stand with the “Kindie Says No to Kids in Cages“ statement created by Bill Childs of the Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child radio show.
